Santa Rosa Dr. Rice CEREC

Restore Your Smile, Keep Your Schedule

We realize you may have better things to do than visit your favorite Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist. With CEREC CAD/CAM technology, Dr. Michael Rice can create strong, customized, tooth-colored ceramic dental crowns in our Santa Rosa office, usually in a single appointment. No temporary dental crown or second dentist visit is required, and the aesthetics are beautiful when we create and place the crown in the same day at Santa Rosa Dental.

Most dental restorative procedures require multiple trips to the dentist. Typically on the first visit, you get an injection of anesthesia, your tooth is prepared, an impression is taken with a large tray of thick material, and a temporary restoration is put on your tooth. By definition, that temporary restoration is… temporary. This provisional crown is not made to last, and sometimes it falls off or cracks in half before you come back for the permanent dental crown. A few weeks after the first visit, you come back to the dentist for a second appointment, have the temporary dental crown pried off, (if it’s still there), and finally get the final dental crown cemented into place. If that hand-made dental crown doesn’t fit well, you may get another temporary and repeat the process.

Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice offers a superior alternative with CEREC and same-day dental crown technology. In the course of one visit at Santa Rosa Dental, we first remove the damaged part of your tooth, and create an optical impression with a small camera. You no longer need to bite down on large trays with goop and wait several minutes while trying not to gag. After taking a quick picture of your prepared tooth, Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice next use 3D software to design the perfect dental crown for your unique contours and bite. That dental crown is then milled in minutes, and soon bonded into place. Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice will match the shading and coloring to your neighboring teeth; in many cases it’s so lifelike you won’t be able to tell which one is the dental crown. The end result, thanks for CEREC and the extensive same-day crown training of everybody at Santa Rosa Dental, is a beautiful, personalized dental crown in one visit with no mess or discomfort. Get the smile you want and get back to your life.

Many years ago, dentists had few options to repair decayed and damaged teeth other than amalgams (mixtures of half mercury, half silver, tin and copper) or gold. Later, they created dental crowns from metal caps with porcelain fused on the outside; these are the dental crowns you see with a metal ring on the bottom. Now with CEREC, Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice can use strong, tooth-colored ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their natural strength, beauty, and function. These materials in your same-day crown closely match the composition of natural tooth structure. When you eat hot food and or enjoy a cold drink, the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates, reducing the incidents of tooth and restoration fracture. These same-day crowns and partial dental crowns are chemically bonded to your remaining tooth structure, which allows you to save more natural enamel, and results in an even stronger same-day restoration. The end result with CEREC in the hands of Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice is longer-lasting and more natural-looking same-day crowns and ceramic dental fillings.

CEREC same-day restorations are not available for all teeth or situations. Please contact us for an appointment if you are interested in CEREC same day dental crowns.

What is CEREC?

CEREC (CERamic REConstruction) same-day crown CAD/CAM technology was developed at the University of Zurich and has been successfully used in leading dental practices worldwide since 1985. As of 2016, over five million CEREC same-day crowns and dental restorations have been placed by the 38,000 CEREC dentists around the globe. After the damaged area of the tooth has been removed, a narrow camera images the prepped tooth and creates a 3D representation of the area. Your team at Santa Rosa Dental then uses CEREC software to create the perfect restoration, and a milling machine carves it out of solid porcelain in a few minutes. This CEREC same-day crown technology replaces the older, less accurate, and less convenient process of relying on lab to hand-make dental crowns and the patient coming to the dental office twice. Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice can also use this CEREC same-day crown technology to create partial dental crowns, known as ceramic onlays and inlays.

How does CEREC work?

We at Santa Rosa Dental avoid placing thick trays of material in your mouth.

Our experienced staff takes a picture of your damaged tooth using a special camera.

The picture is converted into a digital 3D model using CEREC technology.

CEREC software proposes a dental crown or partial crown using landmarks from the neighboring teeth.

Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice refines that virtual proposal to create the perfect dental crown for you.

Our CEREC CAD/CAM milling machine then produces the dental crown, same-day and same visit.

What are the advantages of CEREC?

The most obvious benefit of CEREC CAD/CAM technology at Santa Rosa Dental is that you can have your dental crown the same day in just one appointment.

A secondary benefit of CEREC same-day crowns is the elimination of thick trays and overflowing, gag-inciting impression material. Santa Rosa cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Rice simply takes a picture with a CERCEC camera.

Aesthetically CEREC same-day crowns and restorations are almost impossible to distinguish from original tooth structure. These metal-free, ceramic dental crowns mimic the natural beauty and shading of your existing teeth.

CEREC same-day crowns and partial dental crowns allow Santa Rosa dentist Dr. Michael Rice to preserve more of your original tooth structure, and minimize both the amount of surgery needed, and the amount of time you spend in the chair.

Finally, most CEREC same-day crowns are stronger and longer-lasting than some of the two-visit dental crowns that Dr. Michael Rice previously placed before discovering and embracing this new dental technology.

What is CEREC?

Santa Rosa Dr. Rice CEREC 1

CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CERamic REConstruction. Translated, it means that Dr. Rice can economically restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using a high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How does the instrument work?

Santa Rosa Dr. Rice CEREC 2

CEREC uses CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and milling machine in one instrument. Dr. Rice uses a special camera to take an accurate picture of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, Dr. Rice bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about one hour.

What does this innovation mean for patients?

Santa Rosa Dr. Rice CEREC 3

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dr. Rice no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second visit has been eliminated. CEREC has two decades of clinical research and documentation to support the technology. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and effective.
